Tape Off the Area Where the Caulk Will Be Applied If you really want to keep things tidy and ensure quality caulk joints, then consider applying masking tape to the area first. While this may take a little extra time and effort, it can save a lot of headaches and messes during the process. This technique is particularly beneficial for those using silicone caulk, since the cleanup stage can be a little more challenging. Simply place two strips of tape on the caulking area, with the right amount of space between to apply the necessary amount of caulk. Cut the Tube Properly Many people cause themselves problems right from the beginning, by making the tip of the tube too narrow or too wide. Ideally, the size of the hole needs to be around 2/3rds of the width of the caulk joint. In most cases a hold that is 1/8 inch in diameter should be appropriate for bathroom fixtures. You will also want to cut at an angle, rather than straight across. This will make application much easier and smoother. Most caulk tubes will have a line indicating the right angle for cutting. Speed Matters It’s important to balance speed with the amount of pressure being placed on the handle. If you push too hard, and go too slow, you’ll have a big mess on your hands. If you apply too little pressure and go too fast, you might not have enough caulk to properly seal the joints. You might want to practice your technique before you begin. Don’t Forget to Smooth Once the caulk has been applied to all the necessary areas, don’t neglect the last step. Lightly smooth the caulk with a wet finger. Doing so will improve adhesion on both sides of the gap. It will also make the overall look of the project more attractive and polished.
