How Do You Caulk a Tub?

Has the caulk on your bathtub begun to peel away? Then it is important to replace it right away, as leaving your tub unprotected could lead to water damage and other complications down the road. Whether they are trying to prevent leaks or are installing a brand-new tub, it is common for property owners to feel intimidated the first time they attempt to caulk a tub themselves. At Rooter Hero Plumbing, we provide high quality commercial and residential services for local clients in local California and Arizona communities. Do you need to caulk a tub in your home? Here are some tips that can help make the process less stressful.

Gathering the Right Tools and Supplies

The first step is to collect all of the supplies you will need to perform the task. Here is a list of the items you will need:

  • Tube of Caulk
  • Caulking Gun
  • Rubber Gloves
  • Razor Scraper
  • Painters Tape
  • Utility Knife
  • Paper Towels
  • Denatured Alcohol

Steps to Caulk a Tub

Once you have all of the necessary tools, it is time to begin the caulking process. First, you will need to remove the old caulk with the razor scraper. Be careful when using this device. While it is effective at getting rid of the caulk quickly, it can cause injury if used improperly. Consider using plastic blades which can protect your fingers and fixtures from damage. After the caulk has been removed, clean up the area and wipe everything down with the denatured alcohol. It can also be helpful to use painters’ tape to mark off the tile so you can avoid messes. Next, you will need to insert your caulk tube into the caulking gun. Then, cut the tip of the tube off at a 45-degree angle. This will make it easier to apply. Gently squeeze the caulking gun, holding it at a 45-degree angle. Try to keep a consistent pace and pressure so the amount of caulk used is even. Then, you need to smooth the caulk with a damp paper towel or with a finger while wearing a rubber glove. This will help create a clean line. Remove the tape before the caulk dries, and then leave the area untouched for a minimum of two days after application.

What to Do If You Find Water Damage?

Did you notice signs of water damage while removing the old caulk? Then it is important that you get help from a local plumber to ensure that you don’t have a hidden leak. A professional plumber can conduct an inspection and determine what may be causing the problem.
