Signs That Your Home Heating System Needs Repair
Here at Rooter Plumbing & Air, we get a lot of calls for furnace repair that could have been avoided with routine maintenance. Worse, we end up having to replace parts or the whole unit because owners miss signs of trouble. For the sake of saving you time and money, we put together this quick-read article summarizing some of the common tell-tale signs that it’s time for heating repair. Be sure to call a heating repair company like Rooter Hero if you notice any of these red flags. Timely repair can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars!
Abnormal Work Cycle
Furnaces create heat via the heat exchanger, then blow that heated air through the air ducts with the help of the blower motor. Once the temperature in the area matches the reading on the thermostat, the furnace stops. A furnace that is continually running, or one that starts and stops for short periods might be experiencing an issue. This could mean one of many things; it could mean the fan motor is dying, the heat sensors need to be cleaned, there is a problem with the thermostat or its wiring, or the furnace is NOT the right size for your property.
Discolored Pilot Light
In gas-powered furnaces, the pilot light is a tiny flame that stays lit and is used to ignite the main burners when its time to heat the property. A healthy pilot light should be a stable blue flame. If the flame is yellow or flickering, it can indicate a problem with the heating system, such as a clogged air filter, dirty burners, or a lack of proper ventilation. A yellow flame can also indicate the presence of carbon monoxide, which is a toxic gas that can be harmful to your health.
Strange Odors and/or Noises
A furnace will naturally make some noise when running, but arrhythmic or strange noises is cause for concern. For instance, banging and popping sounds can indicate debris or sediment in the burners or ignition system. Whining or high-pitched noises can be due to a faulty blower motor. Rattling or clanging can mean there are loose parts in the furnace. Finally, hissing or whistling can be caused by a leak in the air ducts or furnace itself.
Watch out for odors as well. The smell of mold and mildew from the air ducts could mean its time for a cleaning. Burning smells, meanwhile, can indicate a malfunctioning fan motor or even frayed electrical wiring. Finally, and most importantly, the smell of rotten eggs can be a sign of a gas leak. If you suspect a gas leak, you should evacuate the property and call your gas company immediately.
Ineffective or Inefficient Heater
Finally, and probably the most obvious signs that your furnace needs repair are inefficiency and ineffectiveness. If your energy bills are spiking despite unchanged usage, or if your heater is only producing warm air or inconsistent heat, then it’s probably time to have a technician inspect your unit.
