Choosing the Right Size Furnace For Your Home
We are accustomed to the heat here in our state, so the winter cold can be a shock. If you want to enjoy the comfort of your home during the colder months, then make sure your heating unit is well-maintained and the right size. Too small a furnace and you will deal with high energy bills, uneven heating, and a prematurely expired unit. A furnace that is too big, meanwhile, will switch on and off frequently, wearing out quickly. In this article brought to you by Rooter Hero, we will review choosing the right size furnace for your home. If you need HVAC installation, replacement, or repair, then call Rooter Hero to speak with a friendly representative.
Let’s Start with the Basics
A British thermal unit, or BTU, is a measure of the heat content of the energy source. More specifically, one BTU represents the amount of energy required to heat one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. To choose the right size furnace, we are going to need to determine the proper BTU necessary for the home’s heating. This calculation involves the size of your home as well as the climate zone you live in.
What Is the Square Footage of Your Home?
This measurement should be found on the paperwork you received when you purchased the property. If you cannot find that, then you can hire someone to measure the square footage or calculate it yourself.
Grab a measuring tape and record the length and width of each and every room that will be heated. Don’t include rooms that do not have ductwork, such as the garage. Multiply the length of each room by its width to get the respective room’s square footage. Add together all of the rooms’ square footage to get the total square footage of your home.
What Climate Zone Do You Live In?
It is going to take more energy to heat a home in New York than to heat one in California. The United States has several zones, called climate zones, each with its own "BTU per square foot recommendation." If you are working with Rooter Hero Plumbing, then you likely live in Zone 2 or Zone 3, needing between 35 and 45 BTUs for each square foot of your home.
How Many BTUs Does Your Home Need?
Multiply the square footage of your home with the recommend BTUs per square foot. If your home is 2,000 square feet, then you need a furnace with a rating between 70,000 and 90,000 BTU.
Remember, however, that furnaces do not provide 100% efficiency. When you purchase a furnace, you should also note the unit’s efficiency rating. For instance, a furnace capable of 100,000 BTUs with an efficiency rating of 90% will actually produce 90,000 BTUs of heat.
