Different Types of Air Filters for Residential HVAC Systems

Air filters serve to remove contaminants and impurities from the flow of indoor air. They are essential components of HVAC systems in both residential and commercial settings. While air filters help keep your heating and cooling systems running efficiently, they aren’t all created equal. Depending on the size of your property, you'll want to choose the right filter for your specific needs. At Rooter Hero Plumbing & Air, we proudly help our local clients make the most out of their HVAC systems with our heating and air conditioning repair and maintenance services. We want you to have great results with your investments as well, which is why we’re here to help you select the right air filter for your home or business.

Fiberglass

Fiberglass filters are the most commonly used type for residential HVAC systems. Fiberglass filters remove particles from the air by trapping them in a fibrous material. In general, these filters are easy to maintain and relatively inexpensive, however, they do not have a very high-efficiency rating. They may also become clogged quickly if there is a large amount of airborne particulate matter. If you have pets, live in a dusty climate, or have allergies, then you might want to consider purchasing premium filters instead.

Electrostatic

An electrostatic air filter uses an electric charge to remove particles from the air. Electrostatic air filters are not as common as other varieties but are regularly found in facilities that use lasers or other equipment that is sensitive to airborne contaminants. The electrostatic air filter works by applying a positive charge to its medium, which attracts particles. Electrostatic filters have multiple layers and are more capable of removing impurities. They also last a lot longer than other types of filters. Best of all, electrostatic filters require little maintenance and can be cleaned rather than replaced. While these filters are more expensive, they can help property owners save on replacement costs and energy bills.

HEPA

HEPA stands for High-Efficiency Particulate Air. The name gives a clue as to what they do. HEPA filters are meant to remove particles from the air, and they're very efficient at it. They can drastically reduce indoor air pollution, making them great for residential purposes and industrial settings. A HEPA filter can be useful for reducing odors as well as removing common allergens. Most residential filters will have a HEPA rating ranging from H13 to H14. The higher the rating, the more particles it can remove from your air.
