How to Become a Plumber in California
Working as a professional plumber can be extremely rewarding. It is a career path that will always be in demand, and those who choose to pursue plumbing full time will gain valuable skills that will serve their family and their community. At Rooter Hero Plumbing, we provide high quality residential and commercial plumbing services for local property owners throughout the state of California. We have built a strong reputation for excellence and take pride in offering premium plumbing services, from routine inspections and drain cleaning services to emergency pipe repairs and sewer line replacements. Many are aware of our achievements in the plumbing industry, but do not know that we also offer professional training for California residents through Hero University. Have you considered becoming a California plumber, but aren’t sure what is required? Here is some more information that can help you take the first step toward your career goals.
Educational Prerequisites
While a college education is not required for a career in plumbing, a high school diploma is needed to become a licensed plumber. If you did not finish your high school education, don’t worry. You can obtain an equivalent by taking a General Education Development exam and receiving your GED.
Training and Apprenticeship
Once you have finished the educational requirements, you can apply for a plumbing training and apprenticeship program. During your apprenticeship program, you will gain knowledge through coursework and hands-on experience. Exams will be provided to ensure that the foundational competencies have been mastered. When your initial training program has been successfully completed, you can now work as a journeyman plumber. This means you can complete jobs with a total value of $500 or less. This stage generally lasts four years, though some choose to remain a journeyman long term, working for a plumbing company or contractor.
Obtaining a License
In order to become a licensed plumber, you will need to have a minimum of 4 years of experience as a journeyman plumber and have at least 1 year of practical experience in the field. In addition, you will have to apply for your license through the state of California by filling out the necessary forms. All candidates must be at least 18 years old. You will also need to submit a full set of fingerprints and undergo an extensive criminal background check. Plumbers will also need to pay a licensing fee and pass an exam before the license can be issued. Once a license has been received, you can get a registered bond, which will need to be renewed every two years.
