How to Drain a Washing Machine

Is your washing machine full of water and refusing to drain properly? This can be an extremely frustrating problem to deal with, especially if you have a lot of laundry to do. Thankfully, there are ways that your washing machine can be manually drained so you can safely and effectively troubleshoot the issue. At Rooter Hero Plumbing, we provide high quality residential and commercial plumbing services for our California and Arizona clients, including laundry room plumbing maintenance and repair. Here are some tips and tricks for successfully draining your washing machine, and what you can get back to your normal routine as soon as possible.

Important Tools and Supplies to Have on Hand

The first step in this process is to gather the appropriate supplies needed for the task. Here is a list of the items you will need:

  • Owner’s Manual
  • Screwdriver
  • Needle-nose Pliers
  • Plumber’s Snake
  • Five Gallon Bucket or Large Container
  • Shallow Container for Front-Loading Machines
  • Towels

Steps to Manually Drain a Top-Loading Washing Machine

Before you begin working on the machine, be sure that the lid is shut. It will only drain or spin if the lid is down or locked in place. A dysfunctional lid switch could be the cause of your draining issue. Manually press the lid down to see if this triggers the machine to drain properly. If not, then move on to the next steps. First you will need to turn off the power to the laundry room at the circuit breaker. Failure to complete this essential step could result in personal injury or property damage. It is also a good idea to shut off the water supply to the area as well to prevent accidental flooding if a mistake is made. When you are sure it is safe to continue, then you can place dry towels around the base of the washing machine to catch spills while you work. Then, you will need to find the drain hose located on the back of the washing machine. The hoses are usually color coded, red represents the hot water, blue is for the cold water and the drain hose is gray. Carefully remove the drain hose from the pipe and allow the water to flow into the five-gallon bucket. Reconnect the hose and toss the water into a bathtub or sink. Repeat this process until the washing machine is empty.

Techniques for Draining a Front-Loading Washing Machine

Front-loading washing machines will frequently use a drainpipe filter or hose that is located on the front of the machine, towards the bottom. The owner’s manual should indicate where it is located and how to open the panel. Follow the same safety precautions previously mentioned and ensure that the electricity and water supply has been turned off. Once you’re sure it is safe to move forward, grab the shallow baking dish or another chosen container and release the water into it. When it is full, then put the hose back in place or turn the filter knob to the closed position. Dump the water into a nearby sink or bathtub and repeat the process until the washing machine is empty.
