What Usually Causes a Toilet to Run? 

Inside your toilet tank, you should see a white plastic tube in the center. If the float is properly adjusted, the fill valve will shut off as the water level approaches the top of the overflow tube. However, if the float isn’t working correctly, then the water level will continue to rise. Eventually the water will begin to drain into the overflow tube and into the toilet bowl. In extreme cases, the water can even cause your toilet tank to overflow. 

Checking Your Overflow Tube 

First, you will need to check your overflow tube. Do you see major signs of damage or deterioration? Then replace it. If the overflow tube is too big, then it can create major issues as well. This can often happen after new hardware is installed inside the toilet tank. If the tube is too tall, you can cut it down to size. Be careful though, because if you cut it too small, then it will need to be replaced. The top of the tube should sit about an inch below the flush lever. 

Adjusting Your Float and Fill Valve

Next, check the float to ensure that it is properly adjusted to the appropriate water level. If you have a cup-style float, it should have an adjustment rod that will push the float down. Is your toilet an older model with a ball float? Then you can unscrew the ball to extend the arm, which may put more pressure on the fill valve. Or you can turn the adjustment screw on the top of the float with a screwdriver.
