How to Know What Size AC I Need

At Rooter Hero Plumbing, we enjoy helping our local clients improve the efficiency and longevity of their HVAC systems. We offer air conditioning repair and air conditioner installation as well. One often overlooked factor property owners need when purchasing a new air conditioner is finding the correct size. But, when it's hot outside, and your AC has stopped working, the last thing you want to do is run around the house to find out how big your replacement unit should be. That's why we've created this handy guide to help determine what size AC will work best in your home.

Choose Your AC Type

There are a lot of varieties of air conditioners on the market, and each one will provide cooling for different amounts of square footage. So, the first step is knowing what kind of AC unit you want. Here are the two main categories of AC types:

  • 1) Central air conditioning: This is a large unit that cools an entire house. It's an expensive option, but it can also save you money in the long run by not wasting energy.
  • 2) Split system air conditioning: Split systems are more affordable than central systems and are great for smaller homes or apartments.

Calculate Your Square Footage

Square footage is important to consider when choosing your AC. It refers to the total area of your home, measured in square feet. To estimate this, multiply each room's length and width, then add them together for the total square footage. If you have access to construction plans or even a formal floorplan layout, this information may already be provided.

Perform a Load Calculation

A load calculation is an important step in installing an air conditioner. It helps you determine how much electricity your home will use and, therefore, how much power you'll need. Your load calculation can help you determine whether or not you have enough electrical capacity to support your new AC unit.

When determining the load capacity, our electricians will look at how many people are in your home, how many windows you have, and how much energy you're already using to operate other appliances and devices. This essential step should always be performed before an AC installation to ensure that your system remains safe and efficient.

Once this information has been collected and calculated, it can help you decide which AC unit size is best. Central systems are typically installed in the attic, which can be easily connected to your ductwork and controlled by a thermostat. Central air conditioners come in several sizes:

  • 2 tons - 1,000 to 1,500 square feet
  • 3 tons - 1,500 to 2,000 square feet
  • 4 tons - 2,000 to 2,500 square feet
  • 5 ton - 2,500 to 3,300 square feet
