Reasons for Sewer Line Clogs

Do you struggle with slow draining sinks and overflowing toilets on a regular basis? Does your family actively avoid chores because chronic clogs have made it too difficult to rinse dishes or wash a load of laundry? At Rooter Hero Plumbing, we offer premium commercial and residential services for local Arizona and California area customers including clog removal, drain cleaning, hydro jetting and trenchless pipe repair. Here is a list of the most common reasons for sewer line clogs and what you can do to fix your stubborn pipes.

Invading Roots

Tree roots are one of the most troublesome sources of clogs. Thirsty tree and shrub roots will find their way inside underground pipes via loose fittings or small leaks. Once they have successfully made their way inside your sewer line, they can quickly flourish in the nutrient dense atmosphere, and may take over your system fast. If detected early enough, then hydro jetting services and trenchless pipe repair techniques can remove existing roots, reinforce underground pipes, stop small leaks and defend against future root growth. Those who have extreme root issues or severely damaged pipes may need to invest in a conventional pipe repair or replacement.

Flushing the Wrong Things Down the Toilet

The only thing that should go into the toilet other than human waste is toilet paper. Unfortunately, some people toss all sorts of objects into their toilet bowls including baby wipes, cotton balls, makeup remover pads and feminine products. Young children can also add to the problem by flushing small toys like Legos and crayons as well. Keep an eye on the toddlers and ask family members and guests to kindly throw away toiletries into the small trash bin provided in the bathrooms.

Using a Garbage Disposal as a Trash Bin

Many people also have a bad habit of throwing foods into their garbage disposal that cause blockages. Grease, oil, coffee grounds, eggshells, chicken bones, pasta, rice, potatoes and similar items will quickly cause problems with your disposal and can also accumulate on the interior walls of your pipes. Prevent this source of chronic clogs by throwing undesirable food waste into the trash can or compost bin.

Damaged Pipes

Underground pipes are designed to withstand a lot of wear and tear. However, even the most durable pipes will eventually succumb to environmental conditions. After 20 to 30 years of life, most pipe materials will begin to corrode, crack, sag and fall apart. When the slow deterioration begins to take place, it can cause large leaks, high utility bills, fluctuating water pressure. It can also block wastewater flowing through your sewer line. If your pipes were installed decades ago, then it may be time for a replacement.
