Reasons Why Water Takes Time to Warm Up

In our age of instant gratification, waiting even a couple of minutes for the water to heat up is asking for too much. Fortunately, our modern technology and techniques have made everyday living so much more effective and efficient. However, there are still lapses. If you find yourself counting the minutes until the shower heats up, then consider the following possibilities we will share in this article. You are also welcomed to call Rooter Hero Plumbing to consult with a representative and have a nearby plumber dispatched to your location as soon as possible.

The Pipes Are Too Big

What happens when you turn off the faucet? Water does not travel back into its source. Rather, it lingers in the distribution line, or the pipes. That is why the initial supply of water that comes out when you turn on the faucet is usually cold. It will take some time for the heated water to reach you and large pipes means more waiting as the chilled water is removed first.

Inadequate Insulation

Insulation is what helps keep your water hot during the winter and cold during the summer. Unfortunately, you generally want hot water during cold months and cold water during the hot months. So, insulation is key. The better the insulation, the more reliable your water temperature. There are plenty of products on the market that allow you to insulate your pipes with little effort, and Rooter Hero Plumbing has plumbers ready to professionally install insulation as well.

Sediment Buildup

Though water is usually treated by the city or municipality before it reaches your building, ordinary tap water contains certain minerals. These minerals are rarely harmful to your health, but they can be problematic for your water heater as they settle in the tank and impede the transfer of heat from the heating elements. The solution is actually simple. We recommend that property owners flush their water heater tank once every year to prevent the sediment buildup. You can also consider installing a water softener to minimize the amount of minerals in your water source. Rooter Hero Plumbing is ready to help in either case.

Low Flow Rate

If you have opted for a tankless water heater, then you have saved space by eliminating the need for a water heater tank. These water heaters produce hot water on demand and are not restricted by a limited capacity. Rather, their limitation is the flow rate. So, pay attention to the flow rate of the unit when choosing a tankless water heater. The metric used is “gallons per minute” or gpm. Faucets typically use 1 gpm; showerheads, 2.5 gpm; and bathtubs, dishwashers, and laundry machines, 3 gpm. Calculate the maximum amount of hot water you would expect to use simultaneously and choose your tankless water heater accordingly.
