Useful Water Heater Tips

Hot water is a necessity year-round, but it is especially crucial during the winter cold. Fortunately, properly installed water heaters are reliable and offer up to a decade of service before a replacement is due. However, poor usage and neglected maintenance can cut that life expectancy short. In this short article, we will provide some water heater tips for improved efficiency and effectiveness. If you need a water heater repair, replacement, or installation, then feel free to call Rooter Hero Plumbing. Our qualified plumbers are experienced, regularly trained, and equipped with advanced tools and technology to deliver quick and long-lasting results. Our live representatives are ready when you are.

Lower the Thermostat

Many water heaters’ thermostat is set to 140 degrees by default, which most property owners do not adjust. However, 140 degrees is incredibly hot. Taking a shower in such hot water will surely scald you. Even washing machines usually use only up to 130 degrees in the hot water setting. Bring that thermostat down to 130 degrees, or even 120 degrees, to save on energy bills and slow mineral buildup and corrosion in your water heater and pipes.

Use Cold Water

The water heater accounts for roughly 18 percent of household energy bills, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. This is in part because we take hot water for granted. It turns out, you can use cold water for many of the things you use hot water. Using cold water, or even warm water, for laundry loads can save energy and protect your clothes from shrinking, color fading, and even breaking down. Basic grooming, such as brushing your teeth and washing your hands, can also be done with cold water. Plus, cold showers have many health benefits you may want to consider.

Insulate the Water Tank

Prevent heat loss by insulating your water tank and the first several feet of the hot and cold water pipes connected to the unit. Be careful to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations to avoid damaging the unit or increasing the risk of fires. The plumbers at Rooter Hero Plumbing are happy to help with this.

Periodically Drain the Hot Water Tank

Naturally occurring minerals, as well as sand and other debris, found in the water supply can build up in the water tank. This buildup can obstruct heat transfer and significantly reduce the energy efficiency of your water heater. This can also lead to discolored and smelly water. Drain your hot water tank once a year to clear the tank of this buildup. Make sure to follow the manufacturer’s directions and call a qualified plumber when in doubt.

Replace Old Appliances

Old water heaters are more likely to break down or even explode. Routine maintenance and timely water heater repair can help, but if your unit is over 10 years old, then it might be time for a replacement. Take advantage of modern features and improved energy-efficiency by upgrading your old water heater. Rooter Hero Plumbing is proud to provide reliable water heater repair and replacements.
