Why Is My Air Conditioner Not Cooling?

If your air conditioner isn't working, it can be a real hassle. You might have to turn up the heat and crank up the thermostat or spend hours trying to find out what's wrong with it. At Rooter Hero Plumbing & Air, we provide professional HVAC services for local customers, including air conditioning repair, replacement, and new installation. If you're on the brink of giving up and putting in a new AC unit, then a reliable HVAC company can help you troubleshoot the problem. While you might need a replacement, there's likely a simpler solution available. Here are some common reasons why air conditioners stop working.

Faulty Thermostat

If your air conditioner isn't cooling, the first thing to check is your thermostat. If it's not set to cool or on the wrong setting, it could be causing your AC to malfunction. Changing the temperature on a thermostat sends an electric signal to tell your air conditioner to turn on or off. If this signal isn't sent properly, either because of damage or improper programming, your AC may not work correctly.

Dirty Filter

Dirty filters are a common cause of heating problems. A dirty filter will restrict the amount of air going into the system, which can cause it to overheat. If your filter is dirty, you may notice that your unit is blowing warm air, or even worse, it won't blow any air at all. To prevent this from happening, check your filter monthly and replace it when necessary, typically once every three months.

Dirty Condenser

The condenser coils collect heat from the refrigerant, which is then transferred to outside air and cooled down. Unfortunately, if these coils get clogged with dirt or debris, they can't do their job correctly. As a result, they overheat and cause other parts of your system to malfunction and wear out more quickly.

Leaking Ducts

The ducts carry the cool air your AC unit produces into your home. The air conditioner's condenser unit cools the air that passes through it, then sends that cooled-off air back into your home through a network of interconnected ducts. Air must flow through these ducts without leaking out before it reaches the vents in each room. A leaky duct will cause your air conditioner to work harder than it should, increasing energy consumption and shortening the unit's lifespan.

Leaking Refrigerant

Refrigerant is a coolant that circulates through your air conditioner's system. When it leaks out, it can cause several problems. For example, you may notice that the temperature in your home fluctuates wildly. This can be extremely uncomfortable and can also lead to premature replacement of your HVAC system if it isn't addressed quickly.
