Troubleshooting AC Problems Why Isn't My AC Working?

We are in the peak of summer, having your AC fail is the last thing you want on a hot summer day. Unfortunately, it is bound to happen at one point or another. All machines wear down eventually, which is why staying up to date on your maintenance is a must! Are you suffering through a heat wave because you are having AC problems? If you are wondering, “Why isn’t my AC working?” Here are some common reasons for AC problems.

Tripped Circuit Breaker

Have you checked the breaker box? This is a common cause for AC problems. If there is a circuit that is tripped, flip it back on and and try your AC again. However, it is important to keep in mind that a circuit trips when it is overloaded, if the problem persists you will need to have it checked out.  AC problems

Have You Checked The Disconnect Switch?

Have you checked the disconnect switch? Both of them? Your AC unit is equipped with two disconnect switches, one located inside your home, and one located outside. Either one could easily be switched off by accident. Check to make sure both of your disconnect switches are turned on. AC problems

Low Batteries On Thermostat

The culprit of your AC problem, could in fact be your thermostat. If the screen is blank, then you could very well be out of batteries. Change the batteries and see if this helps.  AC problems

Blown Fuse

There is a fuse connected between your AC unit and your thermostat. Just like the fuses in your car, these can wear out over time and need to be replaced. If you suspect you have a blown fuse, you should call a professional.  AC problems

Blown Transformer

A blown transformer is another issue that you will want to have a professional take a look at. There are several reasons why this might happen, including faulty wiring. Your best bet is to have your AC inspected and repaired by a professional. This insures that all components that need to be replaced are replaced and that the job is done right the first time.  AC problems

Dirty Coils

Dirt and grime can build up inside of your coils over time. Your unit has two sets of coils, one inside and one outside, both should be cleaned at regular intervals. If not, you risk buildup which can obstruct the flow of air. Instead of circulating cool air, your unit is circulating air that is more or less the same temperature as the warm air you are seeking relief from. Have the coils cleaned at least once a year to help your unit work more efficiently and effectively. Dirty coils can also affect the air quality in your home.  AC problems

Dirty Filters

Just like the coils on your unit, your air filters also collect dirt and debris over time. Dirty filters can also obstruct the flow of air, not to mention circulate dirty air inside of your home. Have your filters cleaned or replaced at least once a year to help your AC unit work better and also improve the air quality in your home.  AC problems The best way to ward off AC problems and to help your unit run more efficiently and effectively is to have your AC serviced at least once a year. This includes having your unit inspected for any damage and safety concerns. This allows you to have repairs made before there is a breakdown so that you can avoid being caught off guard with a broken AC.
